Chapter 9
Jess
After last night with almost kissing Emma again, I try to keep my distance from her. It was a stupid, last second thing that thankfully I thought the better off and pulled away before I did anything stupid. I mean, the last thing I needed was to do something stupid and kiss Emma when she didn't want me to and ruin our entire friendship. Some drunken mistletoe kiss is different than a sober one in the middle of the park. So I push the thoughts I've been having about Emma out of my head and try to give us some distance. Last night, she was already in her room by the time I got my boots cleaned off and I was thankful to avoid another awkward encounter. I hung out in my room while she was getting ready for work and I just left my room now after hearing her leave. I take Duke out for a quick walk in my pajamas and then head back into the apartment. It was going to be a long day of looking up places that were hiring and I needed all the energy I could get. So I have an extra big cup of coffee and I pull up my laptop on the kitchen table.
I needed to broaden my horizons and see what else was out there besides being a librarian. I mean, I could use my degree for other things, surely. I look at the job board and decide to apply for a few temp jobs just for the holidays because some income was better than nothing and I couldn't survive off my savings for very long. Thankfully, I had my own account, but I had used a lot of my savings to move in with Camille, which was clearly a waste of time and money. But I try not to chastise myself too much for that. I mean, it wasn't my fault that my ex cheated on me. She had her own issues and at least I was out of that environment for a much better one.
"What do you think, Duke? Should I apply to be a bartender at some bar called Puzzles?" I ask him and he shakes his head.
"I agree." I had done bartending in college but I didn't want to go backwards, I wanted to be able to move forward.
I scroll through a bunch of books related jobs and even apply to some bookstores. It wasn't ideal pay or an ideal job, but at least I'd be around books. I was looking for better than nothing jobs at this point. I just wanted to be able to give Emma something in rent money and pay my way when I could. Especially since it was the holiday season, and she was insistent ongoing out so much, I wanted to make sure I could afford to do all the things on her list. Not that she let me pay, or that she would even show me what's on the list.
